Argentina has new import restrictions

The Argentinian government now requires pre-authorization for all imports into the country. (Effective date: Feb. 01, 2012)

A new import declaration must be completed by by the importer of record prior to entry into Argentina. This is known as the DJAI or Declaracion Jurada Anticipada de Importacion. Customs will have up to 3 business days to authorize the import, with other government agencies having up to 10 days to provide approval if applicable.

After permission has been granted the shipment entry must be submitted to customs within 180 days. There is an option to extend this timeline.

Shipments that have not been authorized will not be allowed entry into Argentina. The DJAI is requested through the "MARIA" system by the importer of record.

There are certain commodities excepted
from this new regulation:

  • Temporary imports
  • Re-Imported shipments of goods that
    had been exported for consumption
  • Samples
  • Donations
  • Imports to replace damaged or broken
    items (warranty type situations)
  • Diplomatic shipments
  • Couriers

Letters of credit opened before january 31st, 2012, for shipments loaded after Feb 1st, 2012 will be treated separately.

Same treatment will be provided for goods partially or totally paid for prior to February 1st 2012

Apparently there will be additional exceptions for urgently needed spare parts or medicines.

A copy of the ruling and other useful information can be obtained at the U. S. Customs and Border Protection website.

There will be additional costs involved with this new Security Initiative. Final costs are not yet available. Kindly review this information and contact your local UIC representative if you have any questions. We thank you for your continued support.
